STATE AUDITOR ANNOUNCES CREATION OF NEW FINANCIAL EFFICACY AWARD FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — September 28, 2026 — The West Virginia State Auditor today launched the West Virginia State Auditor's Financial Efficacy (WVSAFE) Award, a quarterly recognition program for local governments that excel in transparency, compliance and fiscal management. Using a 100-point scorecard from the Chief Inspector Division, the program will evaluate all 55 counties and more than 230 municipalities on criteria including timely, accurate data uploads to the OpenGov portal, clean audit opinions, early financial statement submissions and citizen-friendly budget summaries.

INAUGURAL WVSAFE AWARD WINNERS
The State Auditor's Office will present framed certificates and digital badges to the inaugural WVSAFE Award winners: Roane County (Oct. 8, Spencer City Hall), Huntington (Class 2, date TBD), Bridgeport (Class 3, Oct. 26 council meeting) and Danville (Class 4, Oct. 6 council meeting).
